Tumescent Liposuction vs. Laser Liposuction
We have many patients asking what the differences are between tumescent liposuction and laser liposuction. Dr. Frank, a New York City board-certified cosmetic surgeon, wanted to share the differences between tumescent liposuction and laser liposuction to help you make more informed decisions.
Tumescent liposuction is a type of liposuction that involves injecting a large volume of tumescent solution into the treatment area before the fat is removed. The tumescent solution contains a local anesthetic and a vasoconstrictor, allowing it to numb the treatment area and minimize bleeding during the procedure.
Laser liposuction, also known as laser-assisted liposuction or laser lipolysis, involves the use of a laser to melt excess fat. The laser is inserted through a small incision in the skin, and the heat from the laser melts the fat, which is then suctioned out through a cannula.

Key Differences Between Tumescent Liposuction vs. Laser Liposuction
1. Method of fat removal: Tumescent liposuction dislodges and removes fat using a cannula, while laser liposuction uses a laser to melt fat, which is then removed with a cannula.
2. Anesthesia: Both types of liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on a variety of factors. Tumescent liposuction includes injection of a tumescent solution, which contains local anesthesia. Laser liposuction does not include local anesthesia, but it can be injected separately.
3. Recovery time: Tumescent liposuction recovery may be longer than laser liposuction, and patients may experience more swelling and bruising after the procedure.
4. Results: Both tumescent liposuction and laser liposuction can produce good results, but laser liposuction may be less invasive and can have a shorter recovery time.
