QWO (collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes), the First Injectable Treatment for Cellulite
The most common reason for cellulite, a multifactorial condition, is the hardening of the fibrous septae (which provide structural support to our skin). These fibrous septae tether the skin, drawing it downward and leading to a mattress-like appearance, commonly referred to as “dimpling or cottage cheese”- like appearance of the skin.
What is QWO?
QWO is a prescription medicine used to treat moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks. It is meant for patients who have moderate to severe cellulite (aka that deep dimpling at rest).
How QWO Works?
When injected into the treatment area, QWO destroys those fibrous septae which causes skin dimpling! The enzyme injected specifically targets Types 1 and 3 collagen, which break down old collagen particles and helps make new ones where the cellulite dimples are. This breakdown mechanism results in smoother skin surface and potential elimination of dimples which may result in smoothing of the skin and an improved appearance of cellulite.
Treatment Prep:
Once considered a candidate for the treatment, the area to be treated will be carefully marked and then the patient will be asked to lie down.
The treatment is performed in a lying down position. The patient is then asked to remain lying down for an extra 5-10 minutes.
Expected results:
The results are permanent with combination of optimal diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes.
Treatment downtime:
None! The most common side effects after treatment are mild to moderate bruising at the injection site, swelling, tenderness and itching. The symptoms only last a short amount of time, and can be treated with Tylenol.
Follow up instructions:
Avoid any blood thinners and any physical activity for 24 hours.
