Finally, patients can achieve the results of true laser resurfacing on wrinkles, scars, and sun-damaged skin without the discomfort, recovery time, and risk of traditional CO2 or Erbium lasers. Introducing Fraxel® III Resurfacing and Portrait® Skin Regeneration. Portrait® Skin Regeneration is the first non-laser technology clinically proven to perform true skin resurfacing and regeneration using the power of activated nitrogen plasma. The Fraxel® III Laser is the first laser to combine the impact of ablative laser with the gentleness of non-ablative lasers. Healing occurs so quickly that there is very little downtime for patients. Don’t be convinced into copycat technologies such as Pixel, Affirm, Active FX, and Palomar fractionated hand-pieces when you can have the original gold standard technology.

What is Fraxel® Laser Treatment (FLT)?
Fraxel® Laser Treatment (FLT) is the original "fractional" treatment that produces thousands of deep, tiny columns in your skin, called microthermal treatment zones. FLT is "fractional" in that it intensively treats the skin without affecting any of the surrounding tissue, which reduces healing time and promotes the skin's natural process for creating new, healthier tissue. Fraxel® III is the 3rd generation of this groundbreaking technology. Deeper, faster, less painful, and more effective are the trademarks in the advancement of skin regeneration. Fraxel® is the new gold standard for laser resurfacing.
How is Fraxel® different from other laser treatments?
Until Fraxel®, there were two types of available laser treatments. Ablative laser treatment (CO2 and Erbium), which literally means to vaporize at very high temperature, is very effective but has significant side effects and requires a lengthy healing period (weeks). The other available laser treatment, being non-ablative, had little downtime but very little clinical effect. Fraxel® treatments offer the effectiveness of ablative treatments with the benefits of the gentler, non-ablative lasers.
How Does Fraxel® Work?
FLT is designed to target aging and damaged skin by treating portions of specific damaged tissue. By creating microscopic "wounds" within the targeted areas well beneath the outer most epidermal layer of skin, Fraxel® Laser treatments trigger the body's natural healing process accelerating the production of collagen and new, healthy skin cells.
What are the benefits of Fraxel® Laser Treatments?
Since FLT has the impact of ablative lasers but the gentler benefits of the non-ablative treatments, healing time is significantly accelerated so there is minimal downtime. At no time after treatment is the skin left raw, therefore, make-up can be worn immediately following the procedure. Some patients are able to return to routine activities, including work and social obligations, the same day of treatment. Others require a little more time, depending upon their skin condition and treatment.
What are the risks of Fraxel® Laser Treatments?
Swelling and redness are the most common side effects from treatment. If swelling does occur, it is minimal and will subside within a day or two. Redness may occur and will fade within a few days. There is a very limited risk of infection or scarring. We have never seen any significant complications.
How many treatments will I need?
Clinical studies suggest that on average, an effective treatment regimen is 3 to 5 sessions, spaced about 2 to 4 weeks apart. Most patients get 4 treatments. Results are immediate and progressive. Optimal improvement occurs for months after the series of treatments. This time frame and treatment structure allows for complete healing and replacement of damaged tissue with new collagen and elastin, and viable healthy skin cell growth.
How are Fraxel® Laser Treatments performed?
To prepare your skin for treatment, it will be cleansed. Then a clear gel is applied to the treatment area. The gel guides the Fraxel® Laser handpiece to precisely read the discreet contours of the treatment area. A topical anesthetic ointment is also applied to the treatment areas approximately 60 minutes prior to treatment in order for the anesthetic to take full effect. Other forms of sedation are optional in our out-patient surgical facility. The procedure takes between 20-25 minutes for the full face. The topicals are washed off immediately after the treatment. Makeup can then be applied.
Is Fraxel® Laser Treatment painful?
Most patients describe the treatment as having an intense "prickling" sensation. The topical anesthetic ointment and air cooling alleviates most discomfort. For those that are sensitive, Dr Frank does offer additional pain relief if necessary.
The Portrait® Procedure
Portrait® PSR treats sun-damaged skin, reduces wrinkles of all sizes, and improves skin tone and texture with a revolutionary treatment. The clinically proven technology works deep below the surface to initiate skin regeneration while preserving your skin's outer layer, using it as a natural, protective band-aid during the healing process. This unique scientific action transfers heat energy to your skin without direct contact or heat charring like many lasers. Portrait® modifies the skin's architecture so that a new collagen matrix is generated. While some treatments lead to improved skin only at the surface, Portrait® alters the structures below the surface creating unique conditions for continuing regeneration and improvements in wrinkles, tone and texture.
What makes Portrait® different from other available treatments?
You get the benefits and results consistent with more aggressive laser treatments, but with the convenience and safety of a non-laser device. Depending on the degree of the problem and the amount of improvement desired, the treatment can be catered to suit one's problem and lifestyle. You will see improvements in skin texture, tone, color, and fine lines with a single higher level treatment that has significantly less recovery than the weeks of downtime associated with more aggressive lasers. In addition, the Portrait can be used to treat specific areas such as wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. Dr. Frank will help cater the appropriate treatment regimen for each patient.
How does it work?
The innovative Portrait® technology transfers nitrogen plasma energy to the skin's surface using a non-contact technique, producing controlled, uniform removal and regeneration of sun-damaged skin.
Is the Portrait® procedure safe?
Portrait® is very safe and its heating effect is highly localized. It does not involve the kind of intense, non-specific light radiation found with resurfacing laser treatments, yet it delivers comparable results.
What does it feel like and how long does it take?
You will experience a sensation of heat during the brief procedure. Generally a full face treatment can be completed in approximately 30 minutes. All treatments require that you apply a topical anesthetic before the procedure and receive a few injections of local anesthesia. Dr. Frank may recommend that treatments at higher levels be accompanied by an oral or injectable medication in our state of the art surgical facility.
How long will the downtime and the effects last?
After one week of a sunburn-like recovery, the results will be seen almost right away, however, one of the unique characteristics of Portrait® is that your skin will show continual improvement over time. Patients from clinical studies have reported ongoing improvements for as much as a year after treatment. Don't have time for downtime? Try our Fraxel III system, Dr. Frank is one of the first doctors in this country to use this exciting new technology.
