Large PoresThe 'pores' of the skin represent the entrance of the hair follicle opening into the skin. The skin is a highly complex organ that provides several functions including thermal regulation; therefore, requiring a port of entry from the exterior. A common cosmetic complaint, particularly on the face, is "large pores". As we age, pores can enlarge from sun damage and just from time. Those with oily skin tend to have larger pores as well. Unfortunately, it is not possible to rid of them, contrary to advertisements. It is possible to minimize them, though. Topical therapies or treatments that keep oil secretions minimized and pores emptied of sebum will make pores appear smaller. Topicals include retinoids, salicylic or alpha hydroxyl acids, and benzoyl peroxides. Mild chemical peeling and microdermabrasion are of some additional help as well. The newer treatments that have proved most effective include the Photofacial treatment and most recently the Isolaz pore cleansing laser and Photodynamic Therapy. Please research these treatments on our site and ask Dr. Frank upon consultation which is best for you.
