Bellafill® Now FDA Approved to Treat Acne Scars - Is It Worth the Hype?

The dermatology industry is abuzz with news of the FDA’s recent approval of Bellafill® as an acne scar treatment. At first glance, the approval of Bellafill to treat acne scars sounds like great news to anyone looking to erase acne scars from their skin. But is it really worth the hype? To understand whether Bellafill is truly the best option to correct acne scars, it’s important to understand a little more about the product’s history and the industry’s best practices for treating acne scars.

What you need to know about Bellafill

Suneva Medical, Inc., a privately-held aesthetics company, would like consumers to believe that Bellafill is a brand new product, available for the first time in the US market. In reality, Bellafill is the same product that was formerly marketed and sold as Artefill, an injectable treatment used to correct lines and folds around the mouth. When Artes, the company that created Artefill, filed for bankruptcy in 2006, Suneva Medical bought the company assets, including the rights to manufacture and market Artefill.

Why choose Dr. Frank

While Bellafill was just approved in January 2015 for use in correcting acne scars, Bellafill has been used since 2006 as a fine line and wrinkle filler to correct smile lines and nasolabial folds. It works by adding volume beneath the skin to lift wrinkles or remove depressions caused by acne scars. Bellafill is a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) collagen filler, which is created from a combination of bovine collagen and PMMA microspheres, which have a structure similar to fiberglass. The combination of these ingredients is what provides Bellafill with such a long-lasting effect. When Bellafill is injected, it provides an immediate plumping effect, while also stimulating the production of new collagen in the skin to provide additional volume over time.

While Bellafill provides effective results and is long lasting, it also has some drawbacks. Firstly, it requires allergy testing to ensure that the patient is not sensitive to bovine collagen products. Secondly, when it comes to its use in correcting acne scars, Dr. Frank is not convinced that Bellafill provides the best results. He prefers to use Silikon 1000®, a microdroplet silicon injection, to treat acne scars and believes this offers superior results to Bellafill.

Silicon injections – a better option for treating acne scars

When our NYC dermatologist learned that Bellafill would be approved for use as an acne scar treatment, he once again examined this product to determine if it could offer better results than silicon microdroplet injections. After careful consideration, Dr. Frank still believes that his microdroplet silicone technique using Silikon 1000 provides safer and superior results to his patients seeking to correct acne scars.

For over 15 years, Dr. Frank has been using medical grade microdroplet silicon as an acne scar filler. During this time, he has established that silicone is safe for acne scar treatment. Silicone is used in many medical applications thanks to his long history of use and very low reactivity when used within the body. No allergy testing is required prior to using microdroplet silicone and very few side effects are associated with the use of silicone microdroplets.

Results with Silikon 1000

Like Bellafill, Silikon 1000 is a dermal filler that plumps up the skin beneath a depression, such as an acne scar, as well as stimulates the body to produce additional collagen. Upon injection, volume beneath the skin is immediately increased. Within three to nine months, as collagen production increases, the full effect of the Silikon 1000 treatment can be seen. Results using Silikon 1000 typically last more than 20 years. Given its history and safety record, Dr. Frank feels that Silikon 1000 is a more reliable acne scar treatment than Bellafill.
